Jaw and facial pain are surprisingly common problems. If you have never experienced them, there is a good chance that you know someone who has. Diagnosing these problems is part of what dentists like Dr. Andrew Kim do here at AAA Dental. One common cause of facial, jaw, and neck pain is TMJ pain. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can become stressed and cause pain; this is sometimes called temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD. There are several symptoms associated with this disorder. If these sound familiar to you, you might have TMD; speaking with a dentist is a good idea. Relief is possible and you can enjoy more days free from pain.
These are some of the most common symptoms associated with TMD:
Even though the temporomandibular joint is the ultimate site of pain, many people point to other parts of their face and neck as the primary site of discomfort. It can come as a surprise to some patients when they are diagnosed with TMD because of this.
There are several ways that TMD can be approached. Anti-inflammatories and over-the-counter pain killers are often the first place to begin; tricyclic antidepressants and other prescription drugs may also be considered. Massaging the muscles of the joint and gentle stretching can also provide relief. Physical therapy and Botox injections can also be used to manage this condition. Many cases of TMD can be successfully managed and treated at home with the help of physical therapy and over-the-counter medicines; surgery may be recommended in severe cases, however.
